- The Somnath Temple, near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, India, is one of the most revered and historically significant temples in India.
- Dedicated to Lord Shiva and is considered one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines.
- Believed to be built by the Moon God (Soma) in gold, then by Ravana in silver, and later by Lord Krishna in sandalwood
- The temple was first raided by the Arab Governor of Sindh, Al-Junaid, in 725 CE.
- It was later reconstructed by the Pratihara king Nagabhata II in 815 CE
- Infamous attack on Somnath Temple was by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1025 CE. He looted the temple, destroyed it, and carried away its riches to Ghazni
- Somnath Temple is built in the Chalukya style of temple architecture and is designed to reflect the traditional design of ancient Indian temples
